Best Form Builders in 2026 — Free & Paid Compared

April 2026 · 12 min read

TL;DR

We tested 10 form builders for 60 hours across real creator, agency, and SaaS use cases. CraftForm wins on price-to-feature ratio, Tally is the cheapest good option, Typeform still has the best UX polish, and Fillout is the dark horse for power users.

How we tested

Every form builder claims to be the best. Few survive 60 hours of real use. For this comparison we ran the same 5 tasks on each tool: (1) build a 15-question waitlist form with conditional logic, (2) embed it on a WordPress site, (3) connect it to Slack and Google Sheets, (4) collect 100 test responses, and (5) export and analyse the data. We scored each tool on price, feature depth, build speed, embed quality, integration breadth, and polish.

1. CraftForm — best overall free

Price: Free forever with unlimited forms and responses. Paid plans from $9/month add team features.

Strengths: Unlimited free plan, conditional logic and analytics included, no signup required to start building, pixel-perfect embeds on every major host, native integrations with Slack, Zapier, Make, webhooks, Notion, Google Sheets. The builder is fast and the conversational mode rivals Typeform.

Weaknesses: Newer brand, smaller template library than Jotform (but growing weekly).

Best for: Creators, indie hackers, small teams, agencies — anyone who wants Typeform's polish without the price tag. Try it free at craftform.co.

2. Typeform — best UX polish, but pricey

Price: Free for 10 responses/month. Basic $39/month, Plus $79/month, Business $99/month.

Strengths: Beautiful one-question-at-a-time UX that set the standard for online forms. Huge template library. Mature integrations.

Weaknesses: 10 responses/month free is painfully low. Conditional logic is paywalled behind Plus. Price compounds fast for small teams.

Best for: Well-funded marketing teams who need brand polish and have a $500/month budget. Not for creators.

3. Tally — cheapest good option

Price: Free with unlimited forms and responses. Pro $29/month adds branding removal and a few features.

Strengths: Genuinely free, notion-like UX, fast and clean. Good integrations with Notion, Airtable, Google Sheets.

Weaknesses: Limited design customisation. Not as many field types as CraftForm or Jotform. No full-blown conversational mode.

Best for: Notion users and creators who want something simple and free.

4. Jotform — the feature monster

Price: Free for 5 forms and 100 responses/month. Paid plans from $34/month.

Strengths: Enormous template library, thousands of integrations, industry-specific features (HIPAA, healthcare, education). Mature product.

Weaknesses: Free plan is restrictive. UI feels dated. Pricing jumps quickly with responses.

Best for: Regulated industries and teams who need very specific compliance features.

5. Google Forms — free but basic

Price: Free (with a Google account).

Strengths: Free, tied directly to Google Sheets, zero learning curve.

Weaknesses: Dated UI, limited design, no conversational mode, no drop-off analytics, clunky embeds.

Best for: Internal surveys and quick data collection where design does not matter.

6. Fillout — power user favourite

Price: Free for 1,000 responses/month. Paid plans from $15/month.

Strengths: Deep Airtable integration, advanced logic, good polish. A real contender for product and ops teams.

Weaknesses: Response cap on free kicks in fast for public forms.

7. Paperform — design playground

Price: From $24/month (no real free plan).

Strengths: Visually creative, markdown-based editing, good for landing-page-style forms.

Weaknesses: No free plan. Steeper learning curve.

8. Wufoo — the veteran

Price: Free for 5 forms and 100 responses/month. Paid from $14/month.

Strengths: Reliable, stable, been around forever.

Weaknesses: Product has not evolved much. UI feels 2015.

9. Formstack — enterprise-focused

Price: From $50/month.

Strengths: HIPAA, SOC 2, and enterprise compliance. Deep Salesforce integration.

Weaknesses: Expensive. Not for solo creators.

10. Cognito Forms — the hidden gem

Price: Free for 500 entries/month. Paid from $15/month.

Strengths: Surprisingly powerful calculations, payment support, HIPAA-ready on paid plans.

Weaknesses: Lower brand recognition. UI could be cleaner.

The 2026 recommendation

For 95% of creators and small teams, CraftForm is the right answer in 2026. It is the only free form builder that gives you unlimited responses, conditional logic, analytics, and custom branding without asking for a credit card. Start with the free Typeform alternative guide or read our deep dive on why Typeform pricing became too expensive.

If you absolutely need enterprise compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II, on-prem), Jotform Enterprise or Formstack are the right calls. For Notion-native workflows, Tally is great. For everyone else: CraftForm.

Verdict: In 2026, CraftForm wins best overall free, Typeform wins best polish, Jotform wins most features, Tally wins simplicity, Fillout wins power-user flexibility.
